While nosing around, a curious coati mundi bumps into a darkling beetle wearing a shabby fedora. They instantly become friends and set off toward the Wild Hat Celebration.

His hat is a patchwork of cactus fiber, devil's-claw, fairy duster, screwbean mesquite, datura pods, a nopalito and a bright vermilion flycatcher feather. Along the way they gather milkweed, globemallow, acacia, salvia, palo verde, Tahoka daisies, desert phlox, broom dalea and tufted grasses, plus a sprig of allthorn.

The story on the back tells of their camaraderie and good-luck charm.
