Barely visible beneath interlocking cholla branches, a javelina sports an armada of spines and color. Scraps of snakeskin, yucca, cactus fruits, globemallow and devil's-claw, plus a siren bloom from a barrel cactus, are caught among the spines.

A fat scorpion poses on a prickly-pear pad, and edging the natural collar are creosote seeds, desert fern and scorpion tails.
