All conversation stops when a tiny Gila monster takes the stage to perform. Her skirt, made of cactus fiber, flutters with Apache plumes and prickly poppy petals, dotted with flicker feathers, acacia, palo verde, shrubby dogweed and desert fern blossoms.

Accessories include snake rattles, scorpion tails, a sprig of cane beardgrass, rattlesnake weed and a flowing snakeskin scarf. The back tells of the onlookers—a chuckwalla, spiny lizard and lovestruck Gila gent—who are mesmerized by her dance.
